Stressin’ Out – Now What?
By Coty D. Miranda
Stress happens.
To everyone, regardless of sex, rank or station.
Sometimes it comes on the heels of a traumatic life event.
Sometimes it comes from money or job problems. And sometimes it
comes from a source you hadn’t expected, and when you least
expected it.
But what to do when you find yourself stressed out? You do what’s
best for you. You learn to get through it. Because, really, what
are the options? Oh, they may be there. But they’re not good for
you, and inside you know it.
There are, conversely, very good, positive ways for you to get
through the stress and tension in your life. And we’re going to
give you 16 solid stress management tips.
First, realize that stress is a normal reaction to those things
that threaten our status quo. Our balance.
Secondly, when stress hits, fight the urge to panic or fall into
despair. Breathe deeply and try one or more of the following
stress management tips to help you best manage the stress in your
life, regardless of its source.
Admittedly, some of these Sweet 16 stress
management tips seem overtly simple. But you know which stress
management tips you can use to help manage your stress; and
learning to use these stress management tips will be beneficial.
That’s what we want for you. Life is short. Live it well.
16 Stress Management Tips:
1. Exercise. Sounds too simple for stress management tips, doesn’t
it? I mean when you’ve received a pink slip two weeks before your
mortgage balloon payment is due, what good will a brisk walk or
good jog do you? Plenty.
Physical exercise is one of the best stress management tips. Get
out there and stretch those legs and swing those arms. You might
find answers or at least a sense of peace comes along on that walk
with you.
2. In a quiet, private space, try stress management tips like
yoga, meditation or deep breathing. You don’t have to have had
classes in these to reap benefits. Stretch - listening to your
body as it lets you know which muscles are tensed and stressed.
Then concentrate on relaxing them. Meditation in its simplest form
is being still and quiet. You can and should do this during your
stressful periods.
3. Get away from it all, even if it’s just treating yourself to a
movie, community concert, window shopping or reading a book. It’s
quiet time just for you.
4. Get enough sleep. Amazing, isn’t it, how we add stress to our
already stressful lives by ignoring our body’s need for sleep. A
bit of wisdom once given me when I was going through an especially
stressful financial period is one that I still adhere to, no
matter what the problem may be. Don’t lie in bed and worry and
stress about your problems – as I was to the detriment of my
health. If you find yourself with the concerns of the world
battering at your mind, get out of bed. Your bed should be for
rest and sleep. Don’t allow it to become your worry work station.
Following this stress management tip has been a boon to me in many
other stressful matters that could easily rob me of my needed rest
time.
5. Cut back or eliminate caffeine, sugar, alcohol, fatty foods and
of course, tobacco. These are proven to put a strain on your
body’s ability to cope with stress and tension. Healthy eating
should be your mantra, especially during tense and stressful
periods. Think a balance of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and
high protein-low fat foods. Nutritional supplementation plays an integral
part of the stress management regime. We recommend using
Extress,
a, exceptional homeopathic and nutrition supplement.
6. If the stress is accompanied by anger – go work it off. Dig in
a garden, slam some tennis balls, clean out your closet. Physical
activity will help burn off some of that stress anger.
7. Talk over your stress and tension with someone you respect and
trust. This may be a friend, a relative or even a professional.
Sharing this stressful problem may help you find an answer, or it
just may make you feel better. Either way, it’s well worth it.
8. Look over your current lifestyle and see if certain changes can
be made to alleviate some of this stress. It may be just
simplifying your surroundings or better managing your time.
Prioritize those tasks on your ‘to-do’ list and better manage your
stress level.
9. Don’t try and take too much on – you know what I mean. Agreeing
to events, tasks or projects that you know in advance will add
additional stress isn’t in your best interest. Learn to say no. Do
it for you.
10. Don’t live to win. The competitive spirit is alive and well in
many of us, but it doesn’t mean we have to constantly be the best
or biggest or fastest or best. Stress can happen when we overtly
covet the prize, forgetting that our health and well being is the
best prize.
11. When at all possible, live in peace. Avoid quarrels. Learn to
compromise when it is the better part of valor.
12. Don’t try to be perfect. Take it easy on yourself. This is one
of the great stress management tips.
13. Be more understanding of other folks’ faults. Sometimes it’s
easier than being kind to yourself about similar foibles. But go
easy on both.
14. Volunteer to help those less fortunate, and possibly enduring
more stress, than you. Giving of yourself can help minimize your
own stress.
15. Be friendly. Encourage yourself to be among friends and even
new people when stress comes knocking.
16. Recall that childlike desire to just have fun. No worries,
just running around the playground, playing. As Lenny Bruce said,
“When you’re eight years old, nothing is your business.” Simple.
