Handling Job Stress.
Job stress does not come without a price tag to
employees as well as their employers. Employers lose when their
employees are absent or tardy. Employees lose when their marriages
fail, when they can’t control substance abuse or have heart
attacks or strokes due to stress on the job.
More than 1 million people are absent from work every day in
America due to job stress. According to one survey of 800,000
employees in more than 300 companies, the number of employees
calling in sick because of stress tripled from 1996 to 2000.
When it comes to job stress, employees suffer,
as do employers. One large company performed a three-year study in
1997 that showed 60 percent of employee absences could be traced
to job stress.
Experts say unanticipated absenteeism may cost American companies
as much as $602.00/worker/year. Furthermore, the price tag for
large employers every year could reach exorbitant levels to the
tune of $3.5 million.
The European Agency for Safety and Health at
Work reported that more than half of the 550 million working days
lost every year in America from absenteeism are because of job
stress. They claim one in five of all last minute no-shows are
because of job stress.
Some social scientists call job stress the
disease of the new millennium. If you work in America, you no
doubt have either experienced job stress or know someone who has;
whether it was manifested through knots in the stomach, a feeling
of queasiness that can’t be explained by the bad coffee in the
break room or tantrums and rages in the car or at home.
If you are someone you love is dealing with job
stress, you may notice signs such as tense muscles, headaches,
insomnia, stomachaches and sleep deprivation. You are a loved one
suffering with job stress might seem wound up as if the slightest
irritation could lead you to an outburst of angry words or tears.
Oftentimes work related stress leads to feelings or lethargy,
depression and hopelessness.
The following are five tips for dealing with job stress;
_ Form a social network. It’s easier to deal with job stress if
you have family and friends to support you. Have lunch with
co-workers also dealing with stress on the job. Enjoy a relaxing
lunch break without talking about your job for an hour or walk or
ride bikes with friends during the lunch hour.
_ Identify the real problem. Sometimes we think we are dealing
with job stress, when the real problem has to do with something
nagging us in our personal lives. Find out what is really
bothering you. When you find yourself tempted to snap at
co-workers about something rather trivial, tell them you will call
or see them later. In the meantime, sort out what’s really
bothering you.
_ Take care of your physical body. One reason we deal with job
stress is because our bodies are tired of sitting at a desk all
day. Our minds and bodies work handle stress best when they have
received adequate nutrition as well as physical exercise. One way
of dealing with work related stress is to complete in athletic
events, jog or take yoga classes.
_ Laugh at yourself. To deal with job stress, it’s important not
to take yourself so seriously all of the time. You don’t have to
be perfect. Laugh at your imperfections. Other people will see you
as human.
_ Don’t take your work home with you. You will feel less job
stress if you know you have something to look forward to after
work. Keep a light at the end of the tunnel and you won’t feel as
much negative stress during the day.
If you are suffering stress related to your job, ask your manager
if your company has an Employee Assistance Program or EAP that may
be able to help you, free of charge. The programs are typically
confidential. A psychologist through the EAP system may be able to
help you with any psychological problems due to job stress.
Nutritional supplementation also play an
integral part of the stress management regime. We recommend using
Extress,
a homeopathic and nutrition supplement that is exceptionally
effective in aiding the body during periods of stress, tension,
anxiety, minor phobic reactions and complaints of generalized
patterns of anxious discomfort.
