Dexedrine.

Ritalin   ll   Adderall   ll   Concerta   ll   Strattera   ll   Daytrana Patch   ll   Focalin XR   ll   Dexedrine   ll   Attenace / Provigil   ll   Wellbutrin   ll   Methylphenidate   ll   Cylert  ll  ADHD Medication Pros and Cons

Dexedrine, along with Adderall, Concerta and Strattera, are often prescribed to patients who do not respond well to Ritalin. Cylert remains one of the least favorite ADHD medications due to potentially life-threatening and fatal side effects.

Dexedrine was initially developed in the 1920's to treat depression and obesity. The use of Dexedrine to control hyperactivity in children has been known since its development but Dexedrine did not receive FDA approval for Attention Deficit Disorder use until the 1950's.

Also in the 1950's, a semi-synthetic derivative was developed and marketed as Ritalin. Concerta, approved by the FDA in 2000, for the treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder, is a reformulated mix of Dexedrine. While many physicians now choose Adderall or Concerta as an alternative to Ritalin, some still prescribe Dexedrine. Ritalin tends to cause more nausea or stomach discomfort, and may produce more moodiness than Dexedrine and other ADD medication.

Dexedrine, Adderall and Concerta have the advantage of a long lasting, one dose per day tablet. Dexedrine also comes in a short acting form. The short acting Dexedrine tablet reaches peak levels two hours after administration while the longer acting form of Dexedrine reaches peak levels in eight to 10 hours. The long acting form permits once daily dosing, which alleviates the need for children to take Dexedrine during the school day.

The ADD medication Dexedrine has a short-term effectiveness of 65 to 75 percent in reducing hyperactivity and the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder in school-age children. However, there are downsides and side effects to Dexedrine.

Along with potential side effects, many doctors do not prescribe Dexedrine to teenagers because of the retail value in high school parking lots and the potential for drug abuse.

Common Dexedrine side effects include:

  • Loss of appetite

  • Weight loss

  • Insomnia

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

 Other Dexedrine side effects include:

  • Nervousness

  • Irritability

  • Over-stimulation

  • Restlessness

  • Dry mouth

  • Nausea

  • Stomach pain

  • Tolerance (constant need to raise the dose)

  • Addiction

The following, though rare, have also been reported as Dexedrine side effects:

  • Phonetic tics

  • High blood pressure

  • Elevated blood pressure

  • Increased heart rate

  • Hallucinations

A growing number of health professionals, parents and educators do not believe a course of ADHD medication is the answer for hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorder symptoms. Since prescription medications do not cure the disorder, but only temporarily controls symptoms, medical professionals who avoid rushing into ADD medication as the first course of treatment now look to alternatives to ADD medication to address the causes of Attention Deficit and hyperactivity.

Most doctors believe the side effects of Dexedrine, and all ADD medication, should be carefully weighed against the benefits before prescribing ADD medication like Dexedrine, Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta or Cylert. The more holistic and health-based physicians practicing medicine recommend natural supplements used to diminish the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder and hyperactivity.
