Cylert (Pemoline).

Ritalin   ll   Adderall   ll   Concerta   ll   Strattera   ll   Daytrana Patch   ll   Focalin XR   ll   Dexedrine   ll   Attenace / Provigil   ll   Wellbutrin   ll   Methylphenidate   ll   Cylert  ll  ADHD Medication Pros and Cons

Cylert (Pemoline) remains one of the least favorite ADHD medications due to potentially life-threatening and fatal side effects. Cylert is a particularly nasty first choice for ADD medication. Since Cylert's marketing in 1975, 13 people died or received a liver transplant as a result of this ADD medication. Cylert is shown to cause hepatitis in one out of every 1,000 patients.

Cylert should be administered with caution. Liver function test should be performed prior to and periodically during therapy with Cylert. Doctors should not prescribe Cylert (Pemoline) unless they completely discuss the risks with the patient. Doctors who do choose to prescribe Cylert should obtain written informed consent from the patient prior to prescribing Cylert.

The following statement is quoted from a 1996 letter from Abbott Laboratories, the manufacturer of Cylert; "Because of its association with life threatening hepatic failure, Cylert should not ordinarily be considered as first line drug therapy for ADHD. Since marketing in 1975, 13 cases of acute hepatic failure have been reported to the FDA. While the absolute number of reported cases is not large, the rate of reporting ranges from 4 to 17 times the rate expected in the general population...Of the 13 cases reported as of May 1996, 11 resulted in death or liver transplantation."

Cylert (Pemoline) should not be taken with anti-epileptic drugs such as Tegretol or drugs that affect the central nervous system. Safety and effectiveness in children below the age of 6 years have not been established. Cylert can also worsen hyperactivity and behavior disturbance symptoms.

Along with posing the most severe side effects of ADD medication commonly prescribed, Cylert (Pemoline) only offers only about a 50 percent effectiveness rate, the lowest effectiveness rate of ADD medication.

 Common Cylert Side Effects:

  • Agitation

  • Irritability

  • Insomnia

  • Dry mouth

  • Headache

  • Nausea

  • Weight loss

  • Dizziness

  • Drowsiness

 Other Cylert Side Effects Include:

  • Stunted growth with long-term use in children

  • Skin rash

  • Convulsive seizures

  • Depression

  • Anorexia

  • Tolerance (constant need to raise the dose)

  • Addiction

The following, though rare, have also been reported as Cylert side effects:

  • Hallucinations

  • Liver toxicity

  • Tourette's syndrome

  • Phonetic tics

  • High blood pressure

  • Elevated blood pressure

  • Increased heart rate

A growing number of health professionals, parents and educators do not believe a course of ADHD medication is the answer for hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorder symptoms. Since prescription medications do not cure the disorder, but only temporarily controls symptoms, medical professionals who avoid rushing into ADD medication as the first course of treatment now look to alternatives to address the causes of Attention Deficit and hyperactivity.

Most doctors believe the side effects of Cylert (Pemoline), and all ADD medication, should be carefully weighed against the benefits before prescribing medications like Dexedrine, Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta or Cylert. The more holistic and health-based physicians practicing medicine recommend natural supplements used to diminish the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder and hyperactivity.
