Causes of Depression II Anger and Depression II Depression and Alcohol II Stress and Depression

Cause of Depression - the Serotonin / Depression Connection

There is not one single factor that can be pinpointed as the cause of depression. Thyroid conditions can cause mental depression. Female hormone imbalance can cause mental depression. Grief and loss can cause mental depression. Medication, chronic pain, genetics, gender and possibly viral infections can cause depression.

An external event like chronic illness, financial problems, divorce or the death of a loved one often can cause an episode of depression. Some studies indicates that environmental factors like poverty or abuse, contribute to the cause of depression. Living with a depressed family member or an ill parent can also predispose a person to depression.

Living with chronic pain or life-threatening illness can also cause mental depression. Genetics can also be the cause of depression. People with a parent who became severely depressed are eight times more likely to become depressed.

The cause of depression varies greatly from one person to the next yet most people with depression have something in common: low levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Although mental depression is associated with low levels of the serotonin, scientists are still not sure whether low levels of serotonin and cause depression or whether depression causes low levels of serotonin.

One thing they do know is that depression can often be lifted by raising serotonin levels. Serotonin, also called 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), is the brain's `happy chemical.’ Although over100 neurochemicals are found in the human brain, four neurotransmitters - norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine, and acetycholine - receive the bulk of research the focus. Of these four high-profile neurotransmitters, serotonin has the most widespread effect on the brain.

Serotonin is often referred to as the body's natural mood-altering drug and changes in serotonin levels can quickly alter mood. If serotonin levels drop to low levels, depression is almost sure to follow. Some antidepressant medications work specifically to affect the action of serotonin. Deprex, a natural antidepressant, naturally works to stimulant serotonin levels without the side effects commonly associated with antidepressants.

While Deprex works naturally with the body to ease depression, Attend safely and effectively addresses the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder, without the depression and side effects commonly experienced with amphetamines use.

It is important to note that certain drugs - amphetamines being one class of drugs - may cause depression. The ADHD medications commonly prescribed for Attention Deficit Disorder are amphetamines and these drugs place the person taking them at risk of developing depression.

Also noted for their ability to cause depression are;

  • alcohol
  • amphetamines
  • antineoplastic drugs
  • benzodiazepines (in excess)
  • certain beta-blocking drugs
  • carbamazepine
  • chloral hydrate

  • cycloserin
  • digitalis (toxicity)
  •  disulfiram
  • guanethidine
  •  haloperidol
  • hormone replacement therapy
  • hydralazine
  • indapamide
  • indomethacin
  • levodopa
  • methyldopa
  • opiates
  • oral contraceptives
  • pentazocine
  • some phenothiazines
  • physostigmine
